Mission and History

Our Mission

To establish a contemporary art gallery run by artists, showcasing the diverse styles of the working artists of Otamatea/Kaipara. To hold regular exhibitions of the collective with the ability to accommodate works by visiting artists.  To present art in a modern and efficient exhibition space.  To bring contemporary artforms to Maungaturoto township and build bonds within the creative community.

The idea of a new gallery came about during a community working bee on the Maungaturoto town gardens.  During a break it was realised that almost half of the people present were artists- wouldn’t it be great we thought, if we directed some of this energy and collaborate together towards our art.

And so the idea was born to have a gallery, run by an artists collective, both benefitting artists and township, bringing a strong creative outlook to the area.

At first we considered a summer pop-up gallery but when the right space became available it was decided to invest in an opportunity to turn the project into an on-going exhibition space.

The driving idea was to exhibit works locally that might otherwise be destined toward art dealers or commercial galleries, allowing MGTO to act not only as an outlet but also as a place where the artists’ focus point would be a place for developing ideas, finding inspiration and allowing experimentation.

The core establishing group is known as the MGTO artists collective, with an ability to exhibit other artists by invitation.

We will have an open call-out for artists’ submissions a few times a year.  Please contact us to stay informed when these occur.

Uniquely situated below the Anglican Holy Trinity Church in Maungaturoto.  Open Thursday to Saturday 11am – 4pm or by appointment.

Please see our sponsorship page for the many businesses and organisations that have made this possible.
