Rupert Herring
Designer wood artist
My name is Rupert Herring and I am a designer and artist. I combine my skills as a cabinet maker and knowledge of material to create work which projects ideas of transformation and potential within the realm of used objects and / or material. Making something new from something old. A lot of the works are nostalgic visions in a world of throw away excess and economic efficiency gone awry. It is my intention that these works will breath through time rather than get suffocated by it. Society’s cast offs are made beautiful through alliteration of form. Playing with the tension of how it has been altered, seizing the opportunity to change its relevance. Key concerns within my practice are reorganisation & transformation of material. Making unusual and aestictically pleasing objects from off cuts and waste primarily from wood. Deconstructing and reconstucting. Changing the preconceived notions of these scraps by utilising tools and machinery to generate new form. It’s about minimising waste, making do with what already exists and to a certain extent allowing the material to govern the form.
